Another Disaster in the Heartland

Yet another massive tornado ripped through the town of Joplin, Missouri in the late afternoon on Sunday, May 22. As a lover for weather how does one write about disaster and heartache. Over the last few days, words cannot describe what happened in Joplin or for that matter Tuscaloosa, Raleigh, or even Piedmont, Oklahoma on Tuesday. It is nature, you cannot figure it out. It just is and it will do what it wants to do. In this case, an EF5 tornado. At 5 o’clock everyone is going about their normal routine but by 7 o’clock, history has changed everything in that southwest Missouri community.

Another killer tornado, killing at least 122 people with still several dozen missing, makes this the eighth deadliest tornado in history. Many people who are clearly inept to be discussing or proclaiming their knowledge on weather will blame the brash of major severe weather on global warming and this is the biggest lie one can believe. The reason that storms like this are happening is because the atmosphere is becoming cooler. If the planet or atmosphere was warming up, less instability would be around. One of the first concepts anyone ever learns in weather is that the clash of cold air and warm air creates low pressure and storm systems. Right there should put any belief that warm air all around is the main reason for this increase of damaging and life-threatening severe weather. It is not brain surgery it is simply science.

The reason the marked increase of bad weather is thanks to a cooling Pacific Decadal Oscillation and a strong La Nina that is trending back toward neutral. This is the same pattern that produced some of the deadly tornadoes in the 1950s and the 1970s. Until this year everyone would remember April 3, 1974, as the day to reference when we talk about “Tornado Outbreaks”. Well, 2011 is running right by it as the new standard when referring to tornadoes and history. Right here is why all talk of man-made Global Warming or just natural Global Warming should be debunked. This happened before, it is happening now, and it will happen in the future regardless of what humankind does.

La Nina’s allow stronger shots of cold, northwest flow into the country to interact with warmer then normal Gulf of Mexico waters and a broad, warm, dry wind from the southwest and the proof is in the pudding of why storms are stronger that what is typical for the United States. The general public needs to be educated on why weather occurs and not just listen to hot bags that did not even major in natural science, let alone atmospheric science. As I have said and try to promote, do the research on your own to know the facts and stop blindly following what is supposedly said from someone not even in that field of work. The sad part in all of this is that it is a scheme that puts more money in the pockets of rich politicians that do not care one iota about you. However, if you think about it, you are supporting a cause that if you would find out the real information should make you churn inside because it is wasted money that could go on much more important matters. Wasting trillions of dollars on flawed data when it could go to the heart-broken and devastated people in Joplin, Tuscaloosa, and everyone in between.
